NHS Digital Integration

NHS digital integration is the work of connecting a Trust's clinical and operational systems so data moves reliably between them: EPR to PAS, departmental systems into the shared record, local systems out to national services. These articles cover the patterns that scale beyond one site, the failure modes that recur across estates, and the decisions worth making before the first interface is built.

Common questions

What does NHS digital integration actually involve?
Connecting systems that were never designed to talk to each other, using the transports and standards the NHS runs on: HL7 v2 over MLLP, scheduled file feeds, and HTTP APIs. The technical work is transformation and routing. The harder work is agreeing which system is authoritative for which data.
Why does integrating with an NHS EPR rarely go to plan?
Because the same EPR product is configured differently at each Trust: different fields populated, different local workflows, different versions and modules. An integration built against one deployment usually needs real rework at the next, which is why the durable answer is a reusable pattern rather than a named connector.
